Students from Hereward College visit National Grid

Students from Hereward College in Coventry gained some valuable experience about the recruitment process by participating in an Interview Skills Workshop at the National Grid headquarters in Warwick. Learners gained valuable experience in practical interviewing skills and got an insight into how this business organisation operates.

The objective of the visit was to give students from the college of further education for all learners including those with disabilities and /or diverse and complex support requirements, the opportunity to participate in mock interviews in order for them to develop their interview skills and techniques. This was also an opportunity for them to build links with National Grid and find out more about the organisation.

Four students received interview tips and guidance on CV writing and each
participated in an interview for a job at National Grid. In between interviews Students were given a guided tour of the Control Room, as well as receiving individual and group feedback on their performance.

Students saw this as a great opportunity to improve their employability skills and to create a relationship with National Grid which might be extremely useful once they finish college:

“It was useful because I got practice at being interviewed and it allowed me to learn from my mistakes” Jon Parsons

“It helped me see my strengths and also identify where I can improve. I would love to work for National Grid once I finish college” Craig Mawby

Judy Brook said that National Grid employees Ben Graff, Alaine Large and Suzanne Reid all said how much they had enjoyed working with the students and would like to repeat the experience as soon as possible.
